Impostor Word Game Rules

Find Impostor is a party game of bluffing, deduction, and quick thinking.

Rules

  • 3 to 12 players, each on their own internet-connected device. Give clues and discuss in person or on an external voice call, not inside the website.
  • One host creates the room and shares its link or code. Other players join with a name and select Ready. The host starts when everyone is ready.
  • Each round has one impostor. Everyone else sees the same secret word. Open your own card privately and confirm you have seen it before discussion starts.
  • Agree who starts and the clue order. We suggest one clue each followed by discussion; this is a house-rule suggestion, not a turn or limit enforced by the website. Do not say the secret word or show your card.
  • The host sets the discussion timer and can pause it or open voting early. Each player votes once for someone else; you cannot change your vote or vote for yourself.
  • The player with the most votes is selected. If several players tie for the most votes, nobody is eliminated and the impostor wins.
  • The room settings control the last-chance guess. When enabled, a caught impostor has 30 seconds and one written guess. The word stays hidden from them until the guess is resolved.
  • The next round starts in the same room with newly assigned roles. After the game, Play Again keeps the room and settings, clears previous results and returns everyone still in the room to the lobby; other players must select Ready again.

Win conditions

  • The impostor wins if the group selects a civilian or ties the vote.
  • If the impostor is caught and guessing is disabled, the group wins immediately.
  • If guessing is enabled, the impostor wins with a correct single guess. A wrong guess, giving up or the 30 seconds expiring means the group wins.

An example round

  1. Four people are playing. Maya, Leo and Sara see 'Lighthouse'; Alex is the impostor and does not see the word.
  2. You agree that Maya starts and everyone gives one clue: 'coast', 'light', 'boats'. Alex tries to blend in with 'holiday'. Then you discuss the clues.
  3. Maya, Leo and Sara vote for Alex; Alex votes for Maya. Alex is caught. If Alex and Maya had tied with two votes each, the impostor would have won.
  4. With the last-chance option enabled, Alex has 30 seconds to submit one answer: 'Lighthouse' would win; a wrong answer, giving up or running out of time would give the group the win.
